What Is NFC?
Every time you tap your card at a till, wave your phone at a ticket gate, or hold a hotel key card to a door, you're using NFC — and almost nobody could tell you how it works. Ten minutes from now, you'll understand it better than 9 out of 10 people. There's a little exam at the end, and you'll leave knowing how to programme an NFC tag yourself.

The 30-Second Version
NFC is simply a whispered conversation between two devices that are almost touching.
You already know Bluetooth and Wi-Fi — radio signals that shout across a whole room. NFC is the opposite: a radio so quiet it only works within about 4 centimetres, roughly the width of two fingers. Bring two NFC devices close together and they exchange a small message — a payment, a web address, a ticket, a Wi-Fi password — in a fraction of a second. Move them apart and the conversation is physically impossible.
That's the whole trick behind tap-to-pay: your card or phone whispers an encrypted payment message to the terminal, and only at whisper distance. No pairing, no passwords, no menus — the tap itself is the instruction.
The name explains the whole idea
NFC stands for Near Field Communication. "Near field" is the engineering term for the invisible magnetic bubble that only exists right next to the antenna. It was designed so that closeness itself is the security: if you can't practically touch it, you can't talk to it.

Why Should Anyone Care?
Because you already use NFC more than almost any other technology in your pocket — you just never see it working.
Anywhere a "tap" replaces typing, swiping, inserting or queueing, NFC is the invisible worker. Here's where it's already saving you time every day:
Tap-to-pay
Contactless cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay are all NFC. The tap sends a one-time encrypted code — never your actual card number.
Transport
Oyster cards in London, Suica in Tokyo, Opal in Sydney — tap in, tap out. Entire cities move on NFC every morning.
Hotel & office doors
Key cards and staff badges are NFC. The door reader powers the card, checks its stored code, and unlocks — in one motion.
Instant pairing
Many headphones and speakers have an NFC spot: tap your phone on it and Bluetooth pairs itself. NFC makes the introduction, Bluetooth does the talking.
Toys that come alive
Nintendo's amiibo figures have an NFC tag in the base. Stand one on the console and the character appears in the game.
Passports
The little gold camera symbol on your passport cover means there's a chip inside. E-gates at the airport read it with NFC.
Does your phone have it? Almost certainly — nearly every smartphone made in the last decade has an NFC chip built in. It sits there silent, using almost no battery, waiting for something to whisper to.
The Magic Trick: No Battery, Ever
Here's something most people never discover: a plain NFC tag has no battery, no plug, and no power source at all — yet it answers instantly, every time, for decades.
How? The phone's NFC antenna produces a small magnetic field. When a tag enters that field, the field induces a trickle of electricity in the tag's own antenna — the same principle as wireless charging, in miniature. That trickle is just enough to wake the tag's tiny chip and let it transmit its message. The reader powers the tag it is reading.
And where is that antenna? Hiding in plain sight. Press the button to X-ray a contactless bank card:
A wire coil loops around the whole card, and a chip smaller than a grain of rice sits in the middle.
Every contactless card, hotel key, transit card and NFC sticker is built exactly like this: a coil to catch power, a chip to hold the message. Nothing else. That's why a paper-thin sticker costing pennies can keep answering taps for twenty years. Now you know something most people who tap their card five times a day will never know.
Creative Uses Almost Nobody Knows About
Blank NFC tags cost pennies, stick anywhere, and can hold any small message you like. Once you realise that, you start seeing possibilities everywhere:
The tap business card
A card with a tag inside: one tap on someone's phone and your full contact details appear, ready to save. No app, no typing — pure theatre in a meeting.
Wi-Fi on the fridge
Programme a tag with your Wi-Fi details and stick it by the router. Guests tap their phone on it and they're connected — no reading out passwords ever again.
Bedside shortcuts
Phones can trigger automations when they touch a known tag. Tap the nightstand: alarm set, phone silenced. Tap the car dashboard: maps and music open.
Gifts with a secret
A tag hidden inside a birthday card or under a photo frame that opens a private video message or album when tapped. Costs pennies, feels like magic.
Proof it's genuine
Premium whiskies, wines and trainers now hide NFC tags in caps and tongues. One tap verifies the product is real — and shows if the bottle was ever opened.
Wearable keys
NFC rings and bracelets exist — a chip and coil sealed in the band, no battery. People use them to unlock doors and share details with literal sleight of hand.

1NFC was born from a handshake between rivals. In 2002, engineers at Sony and Philips — normally fierce competitors — agreed a common standard so their chips could talk to each other. The first NFC phone, Nokia's 6131, arrived in 2006; Apple joined the party eight years later with Apple Pay on the iPhone 6.
2Every NFC device on Earth whispers on the same channel: 13.56 MHz. Your bank card, a Tokyo train gate, an amiibo and a hotel door in Lisbon all use one worldwide radio frequency. That's why any phone can read any tag, anywhere.
3Tags routinely outlive the phones that read them. With no battery to die and nothing to wear out, a typical tag is rated to hold its data for over 10 years and survive around 100,000 rewrites. The sticker will still be answering taps when your current phone is landfill.
4The short range is the security, not a shortcoming. People assume 4 cm is a limitation engineers couldn't overcome. It's the opposite — the range is deliberately tiny so that nobody can talk to your card from across a room. With NFC, physics is the bodyguard.
5A tap never reveals your card number. Contactless payments send a one-time cryptographic code that's useless if intercepted and useless if reused. In several ways a tap is safer than pushing your card into a machine — skimmers can trap a card slot, but they can't trap the air.
6Your pet's microchip is NFC's country cousin — and your phone can't read it. Pet chips use the same "reader powers the chip" trick, but on a different frequency (134.2 kHz) that phones don't speak. That's why the vet needs a special wand. Same family, different dialect.
7The one safety habit that puts you ahead of nearly everyone: a tag is like a link — tapping is harmless, but the message might lead somewhere. If a tag in a public place opens a web address, glance at it before you tap "open", exactly as you would with a link in an email. Three seconds of looking is the whole defence.
